“Keep on going, and the chances are that you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I never heard of anyone ever stumbling on something sitting down.”
– Charles F. Kettering (American inventor, engineer, businessman and holder of 186 patents)
A s the world continues to grapple with the massive health and economic impact of coronavirus, ‘resilience’, as a concept, is being adopted by businesses trying to keep their head above water in these unprecedented times. Early last month, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Government of Canada to help business community prepare, persevere, and ultimately prosper in the face of Covid-19 as they launched ‘The Canadian Business Resilience Network’.
Even though each industry demands a diverging set of resilient coping mechanisms, we have culled together 3 key sustainability principles critical to emerging out of the current crisis and beyond.
- Be Future Ready: Without thinking of various scenarios in the future your company might have to deal with, it’s impossible to build a business that withstands the test of time. Stay ahead of a disruptive curve by recognizing blind spots and imagining radically different futures. Remember that no business strategy can sustain if it doesn’t take into account the impact of climate crisis, supply chains that can be easily disrupted, and a fast-changing political climate.
- Adopt Diversity: In order to strengthen lateral thinking of an organisation, ensure you take into account diversity of both experience and perspective. Seek out external advisory boards to your organisation that gives you a no-holds-barred opinion, ensuring you are able to identify and be ready for change when the need arises.
- Reimagine Social Contract: Foster growth in all quarters of your organisation by reimaging the social contract which is currently being proven inadequate in most countries, with public services falling apart in this time of crisis. To avoid the same strain to your business, address the needs of workers by improving skill development, while providing educational tools that help them stay-up-to-date with the evolving nature of your business.
Remain ahead in your bid to build a more resilient business with an array of resources available here.
